It appears that its based on how the ball is rolling when it enters the tube. As it goes downward at the same time that its doing a rotation around the tube, it changes the direction of the balls spin by titling it on its axis slightly. You will notice the ball is spinning in an upward direction when it goes up the tube in the slow motion shots.
