I watched this the other night. It really is an exercise in genius.
To make the audience stay hooked on something they dont understand is a rare art.

Quextions exist still for me. Who killed Sean Regan ? Is he actually dead ? Why was he killed ? Does it really matter ?

Why didnt Marlowe step in when Jones was poisoned ? What hold did Eddie Mars have over Lauren Bacall ? What wes her relationship to the wife of Eddie Mars ?

Why are there no black actors in it ?

Its been remade most notably in the 70s. But the nearest equivalent is the Patrick MacGoohan serial The Prisoner. Another riddle inside an enigma. Similar in that you dont know whatiis going on but you keep watching.

One of the greatest films ever. A monument to American culture.

There are no black actors in the film, because it was a story about honky society in America in the 1940's. Not too many white actors in the classic New Jack Ctiy which was about crack culture in the hood in the 1980's.

And the racist nature of Hollywood.. Its still a great film.

Regan was a two bit blackmailer who was about to spill the beans on Mars. Or do I have that backwards? The boyfriend of Bacall's sister who was drugged and filmed and blackmailed might have killed Regan. Marlowe wasn't aware that Jones had been poisoned until it was too late. It's a convoluted plot for sure but Bogie and Bacall hold the movie together.

What's "racist" about casting white people in a movie about white people? The idea is to make the film seem realistic, that's why Francis Ford Coppola cast Brando and Pacino in his motion picture about Italians, instead of Henry Belafonte and Nipsy Russell.

The boyfriend was the one they fished out of the harbour ?

Its not realistic to set a movie in LA without black folk playing some part.

If Eddie Mars was holding paper from both sisters he was sitting pretty. He had no reason to kill anyone.
Maybe Flopper will drop in and explain it at some point ?

My only complain is the story is bit hard to follow because there is a lot going on. Other than that it is has a great script, fine acting and it's great film noir.
