I doubt that doing that would've been enough. Sometimes going to the authorities has to be done. The sad thing is when even that isn't enough anymore.
We are much more violent today. More women are violent than ever also. A lot less men will defend a woman in peril than in the past. Good things were thrown out with the ones not so good over the years.
