The July Grand Sumo Tournament began yesterday. Normally this tournament would be held in Nagoya, but it is being held in Tokyo this time, and with some unusual conditions.
Only 2500 spectators are in the area (that normally holds around 12000), and they are encouraged to clap but NOT cheer vocally. Seems like something hard to do at a sporting event, but with everyone wearing masks it should be easier.
Even the TV announcers are separated from each other by big plastic panels.
The rikishi are probably just as glad to have the tournament in Tokyo rather than Nagoya so they don't have to travel, and because Nagoya in the summer is sort of like living on the surface of the sun.
