Stronger ‘Frackquakes’ Are On The Way, Scientists Warn

Stronger 'Frackquakes' Are On The Way, Scientists Warn | ThinkProgress

The man-made earthquakes that have been shaking up the southern United States only stand to get stronger and more dangerous as the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, increases, scientists warned at a Thursday conference.

According to multiple reports, scientists attending the Seismological Society of America annual meeting agreed that fracking can change the state of stress on existing faults to the point of failure, causing earthquakes. That stress is generally not caused by fuel extraction itself, but by a process called “wastewater injection,” where companies take the leftover water used to frack wells and inject it deep into the ground.

Though it was previously believed that the man-made earthquakes could not exceed a 5.0 magnitude, many now say that larger quakes could become the norm as more and more water is stored underground.

“I think ultimately, as fluids propagate and cover a larger space, the likelihood that it could find a larger fault and generate larger seismic events goes up,” Western University earth sciences professor Gail Atkinson reportedly said at the meeting.

Because of this and other warnings, the U.S. government also announced on Thursday that it would begin to track the risks that these so-called “frackquakes” pose, and start including them on official maps that help influence building codes.

Good. We need a whole bunch of those to prevent a big quake form occurring.

Hope it don't set off the New Madrid fault...
... it was a doozy last time it went off...

... would prob'ly affect 60 million people nowdays.
:(

Lots of little quakes prevent big ones from occurring.

Damn. And you ******* claim to be a Phd geologist. Unbelievable!

For every step up on the Richter scale, there is 32 times more energy released. That means to release the same amount of energy as a Magnitude 7 quake, you would have to have 1,048,576 Magnitude 3 quakes. Or 33,554,432 Magnitude 2 quakes. Or 32, 768 Magnitude 4 quakes.

How do scientists measure earthquakes?

I actually welcome this stuff from the AGW OCD's......anytime they go so far off the reservation with stuff like this, its a huge win for skeptics. Most regular folks are not that stoopid as to go for such nonsense.

So.....go......go.....go:D:D

ps.....anybody who believes that fracking causes earthquakes......I mean really believes this, has got some issues.

So I guess the scientist at, the Seismological Society of America , got some major issues.

Methodists. The people that live there quake according to their methods.

Actually, the geologists are getting a field day from this. Not only identification of faults not seen from the surface, but nice boost to seismic tomography.

Mr. H wrote: So... this means frackers are quakers?

Mebbe it means Shakers are Quakers...

... or Frackers are Shakers...

... or sumpin' like dat...

... oh, nevermind.
:eusa_shifty:

We all know that Manmade Global Warming causes earthquakes

More Greenie male bovine excrement to do anything possible to stop the ongoing efforts to locate and take advantage of our oil and natural gas reserves!

s0n....there are people in this world that believe ANYTHING that comes out of the mouth of a scientist.

God Matthew......you and your AGW cohorts are so ******* gullible.

Says Stanford university Geophysicist Mark Zoback, who was an Obama administration Energy Department advisor>>>>

“The energy released by one of these tiny microseismic events is equivalent to the energy of a gallon of milk hitting the floor after falling off a kitchen counter,”

Your usual posts are more intelligent that this. There is definately a problem here;

Oklahoma Earthquake Risk Prompts Rare Warning

According to the USGS, the number of quakes magnitude-3 and stronger jumped by 50 percent in the past eight months in Oklahoma. Some 183 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or greater struck between October 2013 and April 14, 2014. The state's long-term average from 1978 to 2008 was only two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or larger per year.

If the earthquakes are caused by wastewater injection, then the activity could continue or decrease with future changes in well usage in the state.

"We don't know if this earthquake rate is going to continue," Williams said. "It could go to a higher rate or lower, so the increased chances of a damaging quake could change in the future."

Just a repost of my own post since it was classic pwnage of the AGW nutters who think there is some link here!!!

Its the real off the reservation k00kiness that keeps me coming back into this forum!! I get so many laughs......mainly from putting up my own stuff and making these people look like jackasses.

LOL, Matthew is just a ***** boy racist and always looks like a jackass. He knows nothing about 'FrackQuakes' and his science IQ is nothing more than his ability to link to other people's original thought.

In a few minutes, he will blame blacks and Jews for the pwnage.

Matthew...I just wanted to remind you that you are a stupid *****. Quit posting junk science nonsense.
