In 1985, Canada refused to participate in the US Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) which was intended to create an anti-missile defense of North America. Even though it was to become a major beneficiary of this initiative, Canada decided to renege on its mutual defense responsibilities and pretend it was capable of defending itself without US protection.

Fortunately the US went ahead with this initiative, which helped bring down the Soviet Union and provide basic research which has led to the development of modern anti-missile technology. Now the US is planning to install an advanced "Golden Dome" missile defense system to protect all of North America (including Greenland) from Russian ICBMs.

Will Canada once again weasel its way out of contributing to its own defense? If so, the US should consider Canada to be a foreign adversary and take appropriate measures to quarantine its subversive actions.

The original Star Wars wasnt technically possible at that time. A great theory.

It appears with the advent of A.I it is exponentially more believable that today it is viable. America would use it if a nuke was coming to hit Canada anyways, even if just for the realization that the fallout would blow into the U.S.

I presume that if Canada refuses to pay this time Trump will suggest that an equal amount will be applied in the form of a tariff.

I do not speak for the Canadian government so who knows what they will decide. In 1985, we should have been more involved but the lazer system being proposed was a pipe dream and never came to fruition regardless.

I don't know if Poilievre has a mild form of TDS or is just playing to his idiotic electorate, but his "solutions" to Canada's systemic problems are a day late and a dollar short. How is he going to unify and make productive a country that is 2/3 socialists and welfare recipients?

Honestly, until moose becomes priceless, Canada has nothing worth having

We spent good money on SDI. We most likely used some of it in our military, science and government infrastructure projects. We had a chance to miniaturize components even more than the first generation in a second generation rather quickly and stopped and SDI became a memory. Components of course today are much more advanced. Used in space those frit generation components helped immensely. Imagine if we continued.
