Netanyahu is using Snowden's recent revelation to Israel's advantage. Snowden revealed that the U.S. spied on former Prime Ministers Olmert and Barak in 2009. Several Members of Knesset have called the U.S. hypocritical, since Pollard received a life sentence for lesser infractions. Therefore, Netanyahu has called for Pollard's immediate release, especially since he is ill. Pollard has suffered enough.

I think every country is using Snowden's "revelations" to their nationalistic PR advantages - however, the truth is - everyone spies on everyone so the outrage is a bit hypocritical though it does bring the issue out in the open - should friendly countries spy on each other and to what degree?

As far as using it to free a spy - Pollard got caught spying. A compassionate release is one thing - but a release based on the above is blackmail and I would resist it as an American because I despise blackmail. Should Israeli's release those they've captured spying since we know they spy?

Countries spy on countries.

Pollard was an American citizen spying on his own country.

Pollard had broken his plea agreement even before sentencing, bragging about his acts and claiming his guiltlessness..

Pollard has shown no remorse whatsoever for his acts. Indeed, he claims he did the right thing.

Israel has consistently refused to return information as to exactly what documents Pollard gave to Israel.

Netanyahu is using Pollards release as a negotiating point in the peace talks with Palestine. The last I checked, the United States was not part of the Palestinian negotiating team. Netanyahu's attempt to put Pollard into play in the negotiations would set a very dangerous precedent.

If Pollard must be released, let him be released with these restrictions.

he shall not be able to have contacts with citizens of other countries but the United States of America.
his telephone and Internet use shall be monitored.
he shall not own cellular phones or use those of others.
he shall not approach or enter any foreign embassies and consulates.
he shall not visit any port of entry and airport.
he shall not leave the United States of America for any reason whatsoever and will remain five miles away from any of our international borders or ocean boundaries.
he will wear a monitoring device at all times.

Such restrictions would not be unprecedented.

Snowden sure has had a lot of revelations. No proof but lots of revelations.
