I've been watching the movements in the world's shipping lanes to get a baseline of what normal looks like, so if China ramps up their declining exports to the US, I want to see if it can be noticed on this web site.
The Port of Los Angeles is the most affected.
This thing is tracking 20,000+ watercraft!
You can click on each one and see what ship it is, what flag they are flying, and their origin and destination. If you you click on a ship again, a popup opens which shows a photo of the ship and its specifications.
On the right hand side there is a menu bar. If you click on the icon with three interlocking circles, a vessel filter menu opens. Click on "Ship Type" to see a color-coded chart of what the ships you are looking at are.
Tankers, pleasure craft, tugboats, cargo ships, you name it.
You can zoom in so you are practically sitting on deck.
This is awesome.
And just for fun, I am also looking at a web site which shows every aircraft moving on the planet. And its the same deal. You can watch their movements in real time and find out what type of aircraft and their departure and arrival airports. It even tells you what gate and baggage terminals assigned to each.
A friend of mine is currently on his way to Ukraine. I have watched each leg of his journey. Totally cool!
If you have the flight number and airline, there is a search bar which will help you find the plane while it is airborne. And it will show you it's flight trace back to the airport it departed from.
Helicopter flights are also on that site.
Enjoy!
