The poor are horrible money managers.... It's been proven time and again that they're poor for a reason. That doesn't let them off the hook for their share. Many of the worlds wealthiest people started as poor people. It will turn out as always under such a system that the rich will continue to be the major contributors. I'm okay with it TBH as longs as it is sufficiently high to cover what we are spending now, though I would keep income taxes for dividends and investment income on the books. I've never minded paying VAT when traveling and seldom try to reclaim it on goods purchased. I do like the pricing system where the taxes are already priced in so if something says it is 5 euros then 5 euros is all you pay at the register.

VAT taxes apply themselves at multiple levels of production and distribution for all goods covered under the VAT. A tariff is a one off on imported items only.

Revenue is only a part of the problem. Our current system of taxing productive people and distributing to unproductive people is what has resulted in the deficit we are creating. You can take everything that people earn and what you will have is destruction of any incentive to self-sufficiency. Spending must be addressed also, that is where we are failing. Congress has created a codependent society that is fighting each other for the leftovers. Congress has made a mess of the tax laws on purpose to get themselves reelected by promising benefits that the non-existent middle class used to earn. Each individual congress critter is there for the short-term enrichment of themselves and could care less what happens 2 years down the road.
