Prisoners get three nutritious 2000 calorie meals per day at a cost that is a fraction of what 'civilians' pay. Prison meals average cost is $2 to $4 per day per prisoner. On the outside the cost is north of $8 per day. Prisons aren't in the business of fattening up their residents. Neither should SNAP.

Just an observation---Prisoners are fed 2K calories a day--not three meals of 2K calories, according to your linked article. If they consumed 6K a day they would be obese in most cases. From your article---
Food is institutional and basic, providing about 2,000 calories daily.

Prisons buy from wholesale providers.

Prisons buy in bulk.

Prisons prepare in bulk.

Take each prisoner, send them to the grocery store (assuming you let them out of prison to shop), make them shop for their own food and have individual facilities to prepare meals. See what happens to meal costs.

I work for a school system, we can serve meals to the rug-rats at lower cost also, for the same reasons.

Which is a great reason to only make "institutional and basic" food stuffs available to people on SNAP/WIC/EBT

Back in the day the convicts worked hard and were fed very well....Then again we raised/grew much of what we fed them.....They would ***** at you if the per meal cost was over .15 cents.

I did not give a shit because we ate the same food the convicts did. ;)

Now the "inmates" are mostly warehoused and while the processed crap they eat passes muster daily calorie/nutrition wise it really sucks taste wise.

SNAP shoppers prepare their own meals, at no cost.

USDA calculates what a person or family needs to supplement a healthy diet. Then the SNAP enrollees go out and fill their shopping carts with snacks and highly processed foods, which contribute to their health problems, particularly diabetes. Of course, this overwhelms the healthcare industry (too much of a good thing) and has given rise to Obamacare and the abuses thereof.

Prisons don't pay rent. They don't pay taxes. A McDonalds will pay North of $20k a year just in Property Tax. IF they own the building. Often, they build it, sell it to another entity and then lease it back. For $10k a Month or more.

Prisons don't pay their employees, they're inmates. BIG Expense, there. Prisons don't have to buy Workers Comp or pay for Unemployment Insurance or buy Fire Insurance or pay electric bills and for water and sewer....

Is the cost of the facility factored in? Doubtful. This is not a good comparison
