Jules Weiss had stopped to take a photo at an overlook along the George Washington Parkway. On the way back to her car, she felt something bite her.

"It felt just like a bee sting," Weiss told local station NBC4. "There were two fang marks with liquid coming out."

The former emergency medical technician had suffered a copperhead snake bite. Within an hour, she said, her foot turned “grayish” and started to swell.

She went to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md., where she received three IV bags of antivenom over 18 hours. Then, the scary part: a whopping $55,000 bill for treatment.

“It’s not a number I can really wrap my head around,” Weiss said. Health insurance would bring the cost down to a few hundred dollars, according to NBC4. But the woman’s insurance had just lapsed. Antivenom involves milking individual snakes and is a costly treatment.

Sure they do. They might get a good advocate and negotiate reductions but the charges don't magically disappear just because you don't have insurance, you can still eat a hell of a medical bill. Many people have been brought to financial ruin because they didn't have medical insurance.

Actually most ER users never pay a penny. Congress passed the EMTALA Act 30 years ago which mandates treatment for everyone who goes to an ER even if they can't pay. That's how illegal aliens get free health care in america.

Think about this and you'll see why hospitals should never have been put in the private profit sector in the first place. Where I grew up we went to a community hospital funded by the city.....the only fees they charged were to break even. THIS is why we got Barry-Care...an overreaction yes, but clearly a viable alternative to a health-care system that priced out almost half of all Americans.

Using the emergency room when a doctor's visit would be appropriate is common. And there are some ways to assure yourself of at least some ER treatment. However, if you go to the ER and they admit you rather than treat and release, it's a different story.

I had my tonsils and adenoids out in 1954 Detroit....my mom got a two-for-one deal on my sister so I had to go in too....I ran away from home....my brother found me and dragged me back......a Vernors ginger ale to sooth my throat came out of the vending machine in the hallway....in 1954 it was 20 cents. The same can of Vernors after my 1986 double-hernia operation in Phoenix was $11. State Farm claimed I had a "pre-existing" injury and the seond day I was in the hospital refused to pay. An administrator came in and gave me the stink-eye demanding full payment. I could have gone to the VA but they may have amputated my leg instead of sewing up my hernias. Anyway, State Farm decided to pay HALF under some "catastophic clause" jive and I got stuck with the rest......when the hospital (Humana) was told I was only getting half in insurance they asked me with a straight face if I wanted my bill reduced.....they cut it IN HALF....that's the whole thing....they soak the insurance companies and instead of standing up to them, the insurance companies just raise rates until they're unaffordable.
