Mass. lawmakers are considering mandating later start times for schools in the Bay State. Sleep experts in increasing numbers are advocating later start times so adolescents can get more Zzzzs. It is believed this would make kids healthier and better prepared to learn. Of course, there are arguments to the contrary as well. We'll see.
maybe parents should mandate an earlier bedstje.

So when some kid doesn't go to college and gets a job with a concrete contractor and can't keep it because he is late everyday... then what?.... life is tough... work is hard... and the early bird gets the worm still.... stop babying teens...

We used to start school at nine in the morning in the 1960s.

One must learn to adapt to the needs of a man with a carrot and a stick.

I am truly sorry that you did not get a quality education like most of us did.

Which state is that? I may need to apologize!
no need Sir, you are a professional and no skin to you or to it

.............Vermont Admiral

Cliffs notes >>> we came to the point where we were paying more for less results in public Ed

Our state had a meltdown .......mostly due to policies that trashed public ed here

which should be the focus......

let's not blame the 'troops' for what they've been thrown into to deal with

Did you account for increased spending for special education, replacing aging schools, increased administrative costs because of government mandates, and the increased transportation cost caused by fuel prices? None of those educate students. in general. Score decrease because of societal impact, and the quality of students.

The greatest cost in education is teacher salaries and that hasn't kept up with inflation in most locales.

No, the chart doesn't show that, nor does it show the time interval.

Increased immigration and a greater emphasis on inclusion also means more students in the system. That will influence outcomes as well.

Do you believe that these extra costs you cite weren't being paid throughout history, except for probably
special education?

Would a later start time necessarily cause more sleep time? Would it disrupt the schedules of two-income families that usually want the kids out of the house as early as possible?

FWIW, my entire school life required me to get up around 0730 - later than most, I suppose - and lack of sleep was never an issue with me.

Throw in early morning SWIMMING PRACTICE - which a lot of kids do - and it becomes insane. If school starts later, then swimming coaches must be restrained.
