Poor performance by the ship's crew and material condition caused the ship to lose power. The bridge was also not upgraded to prevent such disasters. The costs will rise to about 5.2 billion to replace the bridge.

How are ships that dangerous allowed into ports without redundant backup systems or tug boat escorts?

With a real backup system, there is no way a single wire could cause a total loss of control.

There should also be port safeguards against possible intentional terrorism. Bridges are supposed to be built with redundant backup structure design to prevent single point failure causing a collapse.

Why did the Dali not shoot flares at the bridge to warn workers on the bridge?

Why was there no warning system on the bridge or with the workers? Lights, PA systems or Drones could be used to warn people on bridges.

Biden is the one who let the ship’s insurer off the hook. They should have been held liable for the entire cost of the replacement. Then, just maybe the insurance companies will force the cheapskate shipping companies to properly maintain and crew their vessels.

Sorry! International maritime law says otherwise. The insurance provider is only liable up to the amount of the value of the vessel and that is about $200 million. That was stated immediately after the accident.

You have to operate the ship properly for backup systems to work.

The bridge was ancient and not expected to have to deal with terrorism or accidents like this. It was not upgraded.

I don’t recall that, but I will accept you are correct. But Biden immediately announced the federal government would pick up the tab instead of leaving it to the state. Unless that bridge had a federal highway on it, repairing/replacing it was a state responsibility.

That wasn't Monday-morning quarterbacking. This was a choice not to regulate large shipping corps, refuse to properly construct & protect critical infrastructure.

These collisions were not unforeseen, because that same pier was hit decades earlier by another large cargo ship. Also the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in St. Pete, FL also suffered the same fate decades ago, so they made sure it couldn't happen again. This port refused the plans presented to protect those piers.

Properly built bridges are extremely difficult to collapse. Ukraine has repeatedly attacked Russia's Kerch Bridge & can't bring it down.

If flairs are being shot over a bridge you are on, you can bet it would cause you to look to see that ship coming at it. This was a failure to plan & train for disaster. As was the failure to regulate, operate & train crew of a ship that had multiple failures in the days leading to this disaster.
