When you read the sentence fragment “the police are on alert as protests against undocumented migrants grow, reflecting deep-seated concerns over jobs and crime”, what does it bring to mind?
Maybe it makes you think of the recent decision voted in by the European Parliament, which called for mass deportations of illegal immigrants, and the establishment of “return hubs” or “offshore centers” outside the continent to which those being deported could be sent. The successful vote prompted a number of “far-right” MEPS to stand up and shake their fists while chanting, “Send them back!”
Or did you perhaps picture the recent anti-immigrant protests in England and Northern Ireland?
Well, as it happens, the quote comes from this article in the Daily Maverick. It was written by a journalist named Siyabonga Goni, and concerns a protest that occurred yesterday in Wynberg, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. Blacks and “coloureds” make up two-thirds of Wynberg’s population, but the suburb has a non-negligible white component of 24%. The protesters that can be seen in the photo at the top of this post seem to be mostly black.
