United States Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), who built a reputation as an independent voice in the Senate and for working with both Democrats and Republicans to find common-sense solutions to the problems facing New Jersey and Washington, passed away of cancer at age 86 on Tuesday, July 6 at 10:59PM EST at his home in Newark. The Democratic Senator from New Jersey, known best for his homeland security and environmental initiatives in the Senate, will be missed by all Americans regardless of their political colors or creed.

Erroneous emails announce senators' deaths - wtop.com

WTOP was one of the news organizations that received an email that said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) had died Tuesday of liver cancer. David Carle, a spokesperson for Leahy, tells WTOP the email was a "spoof."

A similar spoof email went out Monday about Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). KGO-TV in San Francisco says the email announced Feinstein had died of cancer in her San Francisco home.

Sgt. Kimberly Schnieder with the U.S. Capitol Police tells WTOP an investigation into both incidents is ongoing.

At least three Democratic senators have been subjects of false reports of their deaths in the past two days, prompting the U.S. Capitol Police to open an investigation into the matter.

Several news outlets received a hoax e-mail news release, announcing the death of Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on Tuesday. Leahy, 70, who participated in July 4 events, is alive and well, according to spokesman David Carle.
