I see you never took a research course in graduate school. Correlation studies can show cause and effect just as any other research can. Correlations use a coefficient to determine significance. All studies result in a numerical value. If its above 35 its significant and the higher the number the more significant. Its never 100 but when you 70 or more its a valid way to show cause and effect
