You forgot exercise and seeing a doctor routinely.

Depends on what your definition of "retirement" is. Cost and standard of living. My definition of retirement does not involve stopping working. It involves doing what I WANT to and not what I HAVE to. Ie...chasing the money.
I know a few well off retirees who thought they were going to travel and just golf everyday....and ended up going out of their skulls with boredom and hopped right back into working. Keeps the mind sharp and a reason to live.

Work is a reason to live? I guess for some. I've been retired overv30 years. I should have gone earlier. I regret how hard I worked.

If there is deportation plus a mass resignation, imagine the job openings. Young people working in menial jobs will immediately be trained and placed in much higher jobs.

If you work for the Federal government, you just raise taxes every time you want a raise.

In most cases it is done as a courtesy so they can prepare a replacement.
Many employers take advantage and release you right away.
Best path is to just say, I am retiring on Friday, Good Bye
