33 trapped Chilean miners could be rescued as early as Sunday -

The 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for two months could be rescued as early as this weekend if engineers decide not to reinforce a newly drilled shaft with iron tubes, USA TODAY's Victor Herrero reports.


"The rescue could happen as soon as this Sunday," says Andre Sougarret, who is in charge of the rescue team at the San Jose mine in northern Chile. "But we don't know yet for sure. In any event, it will be between Monday and Friday of next week."

Sougarret says engineers are debating whether to reinforce parts of the 2,000-foot shaft with iron casing, since the shaft is not 100% vertical.

"He will give TV interviews to those who pay the most," says Jessica Yáñez, the wife of Esteban Rojas. Rojas' unshaved face was the first image the outside world saw of those trapped in the gold and copper mine.

"We have suffered a lot and now is payment time; we have to take advantage of this tragedy," she says, adding that she has a preliminary deal with a Chilean TV station to pay for her husband's appearance.
