But Republicans do not want Trump to go through this punishment. Democrats want all Presidents future and present to be banned as well.

Because a law can’t do that, the president is a seperate co equal branch of govt, the constitution outlines the requirements for president. You’d need a constitutional amendment for that

This is a stupid law even for members of Congress anyway…it’s deflection from the fact Dems engage in insider trading

Congress cant just pass laws for requirements for the POTUS. The requirements for President are outlined in the constitution.
I do agree it should be a requirement though.
Congress can absolutely ban congress from stock trading.
