The old guard Republicans generally supported policy of not talking with political heads of state out of favor with the U.S. Those who violated that principle were pretty severely criticized.
President Trump rejects that as policy because ever since it became policy the world has been at war or cold war or at the brink of war. His willingness to speak with and come to reasonable terms with belligerent heads of state not only caused them to be less belligerent--North Korea, Iran, Russia, China, the Taliban etc.--but it produced the closest thing to world peace any of us have ever known.
I prefer Trump's way to the old guard GOP/Democrat way.
And while most of our embassy personnel left Russia after the invasion of the Ukraine--400 or so of them--we still maintain a caretaker staff and our embassy remains open in Moscow. It seems strange not to talk to the leader of a country with which we have diplomatic relations.

I don't pretend to be able to define Trump's plan for how to get anything accomplished. I just know he's the best at getting things done as any President of my now very long lifetime. But I am confident that both Zelensky and Putin are wanting to end the current war and Trump could very well be their hope to make that happen.

Russia took territory under Obama, a weak, ineffective President. Russia has made war to take territory under Biden, a weak, ineffective, incompetent President. Russia made absolutely no move to take territory when Trump was President and I would be amazed if it made any move or threat to do so in Trump's second term.
That is the difference between effective diplomacy and weak, ineffective, incompetent leaders.
