REMEMBERING
Not many will remember
on this 5th of November,
“The Golden Gate in 48”
or “Let ‘er drip, there ain’t no ship”
Or “Blow it out your barrack’s bag”
and what is meant when you hear “ TS”
or “Blue Ointment” or “SOS”
or “up yours with a wire brush”
or “home alive in ‘45”
and all that other GI jive.
No one sings “My Buddy” today
or can set “headspace and timing”
or has a clue as to what to do
when a buddyÂ’s lung shot is bubbling
Well, IÂ’m 90 today
and I’m “reupping” and “going all the way”
And so IÂ’m celebrating my birthday
with those of my brothers
who have gone on ahead,
none of whom are really yet dead,
and with all the others, sisters and brothers,
who have their march orders
for this or some other day

both supporters of the military-industrial complex
and both bound to support
endless war---whether ours or those of Israel
