I always thought, "Well, it was cold and the river was mostly frozen, they could get across".

When I visited the very spot this happened, and looked at the Deleware river there, I can see that in the dead of winter, in a snow storm, this was the only way.

Now, did he stand at the front of the dingy bravely? No one will ever know. More likely, he put on a brave face for the troops and just stared intently for the shoreline wondering if he was going to freeze his balls off before the end of the war.

That does not detract from the brilliance of the strategy, nor the bravery of our lads fighting for our freedom.

But I"m betting he turned to the coxwain and said, "Shit, this could freeze the tits off a brass hooker!"
