I remember there was a lot of buzz about this movie way back in 2010, but I never got around to it. I was in my own world of chaos at the time.
Holy smokes! This movie is one of the grittiest I have ever seen!
The story revolves around the horrific brutal life led by a 355-pound illiterate pregnant black girl named Precious. The backstory about this movie is that the producers looked far and wide for the right 355-pound girl, and they looked at a lot of them, and finally settled on Gabourey Sidibe.
This was Sidibe's very first acting gig, and right out of the gate she earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination. She lost to Sandra Bullock for her role in The Blind Side, a biopic which has recently been revealed to be totally fake.
The actress who plays Precious's mother won Best Supporting Actress, and she frigging earned it. She was so real you forget she is acting.
The director does really cool things with lighting.
Precious is trying to achieve escape velocity from the tar pit she is trapped in, but her mother is jealously and viciously beating her down.
The cruelties heaped on this girl just go on and on and on. More and more is revealed as the movie progresses.
Precious frequently dissociates during moments of trauma. She fantasizes about being popular and famous and pursued by men while the the worst abuses imaginable are being inflicted on, or recalled by, her. I'm sure a lot of women out there can relate.
Mariah Carey plays Precious's social worker. I'm not a fan of her music, but she has some acting chops I was unaware of.
Some of the best acting, directing, and editing I have ever seen takes place during a session between Precious and the social worker.
Mariah Carey does this thing Robert DeNiro has mastered. There is a moment where she doesn't move a single facial muscle, but you can tell exactly the horror she is feeling.
The visits to the social worker by Precious and then by her mother are probably conversations social workers have every single day.
If I was such a social worker, I would probably shoot myself.
Don't miss this movie.
