Yeh, we are all guilty of this kind of thing, just as we are all guilty of just whatever we may try to accuse others of.

We get ticked off at someone and want to punish the person somehow: refuse to speak to him, get sarcastic, you name it.

But how often do we punish ourselves? And isn't that what Jesus meant when He said "Unless you do penance, you will perish [in Hell]"

Jesus doesn't care about us perishing by simply dying, as He knows we all do, so we know he means "perish in Hell."

So, to define Penance: It is sacrificing something or enduring something painful for the sake of expiating our sins. The protestants claim that Jesus did EVERYTHING on the Cross and so we humans don't have to do anything.

Excuse me? Jesus was God. Yes, he was man also, but that's beside the point I'm trying to make. No one is magically made perfectly pure and holy just by "accepting Christ" whatever subjective meaning that term may have.

So anyhow, next time you feel hatred for someone because that person sinned against you somehow.. you may want to remember to also punish yourself for your sins which are no better and could be a lot worse.. and God would appreciate that and probably bless you for it..

Penance: Wallowing in your guilt without repentance.

Actually, no. Penance is meant to be therapeutic and healing. Early Church practice put some thought into this. For example if someone had lustful thoughts/behavior they wanted to overcome, a penance they might practice was to abstain from a food they found pleasurable. Overcoming that simpler pleasure showed them strength in overcoming a greater pleasure.

If that works, go for it.

I quit smoking by limiting the cigs I smoked until I finally quit altogether. Doing 'penance' wouldn't have worked. Other bad habits I just quit cold turkey.

That in itself was a penance. Keep in mind penance and repentance have the same roots. Both call for a change in behavior.

and I'm sure you tried penance

You do an awful lot of talking about what other people should do for their own penance and a little about what you do yours.

In another thread, you just said that Donald Trump is an honest man and he speaks honestly and that proves you’re an idiot. Donald Trump lies more than any human being I have ever seen in my entire life.

But yet you accuse others of being unfair to him because he’s so honest.

You have nothing to offer anyone in the way of spiritual advice if you think Trump is anything but a liar and a criminal.

If you are this gullible and this easily fooled, you are in no position to tell others how to live.

I think I will put you on Ignore. I'm sick of people who can never say anything kind or helpful.. it's always just hate, hate hate all day long

I love the Church's teaching on doing penance (it's in the Bible, Lk 13:3)

The A/C goes out in summer.. you offer it up for those on their way to Hell
The heater goes out in winter.. ditto
The store is out of fatty hamburger meat (yum).. ditto
The Mexican restaurant just sold it's last enchilada meal, to the person just in front of you in line ..
Only liberals come to your threads! God, please! :omg:

As Padre Pio once said, something like this: The worst thing in life is wasted suffering

You’re the one who is spewing out the hate hate hate at every leftist on this site. Accusing others of being dishonest for pointing out to you that Donald Trump is a liar, a rapist and a felon.

And then you refuse to acknowledge your lies, or apologize for them. No, you’re telling us we need to do pennance for telling you the truth.

I am being helpful. Your spiritual life is your own business. You are in no position to tell others how and when they need to do the pennance.

How do you punish yourself?
Why should I answer when you will just use the answer as another excuse to pounce on me and get your frustrations (caused by who knows what) out?

And I never used the term punish oneself anyhow (Oh, wait, I did in the title, but not the content).

I fast when I would rather not (to answer the Q) and other things

Stop trying to make everything about TRUMP!.
