Life is unfair! Fortunately, some civilizations minimize unfairness.

French peasants were not slaves. They were not unfree. They were not physically abused. But since they did not own land, they had to pay about 30% to 40% of their produce as rents, tithes, and taxes. That enabled Nobility to develop fine arts and sciences.

In Russia and East Europe, peasants were bound to their owners and subject to physical abuse. In America up to 1865, slaves were treated even worse. American Slaves had work duties about 2.5 times greater then Russian Serfs.

oh...but that's another thing....

apples and oranges my friend.
A very important aspect of pre-Industrial Society is redistribution of wealth. Prior to Industrial Revolution, resources were scarce, thus somehow they had to be extracted from the Lower Classes.

When life is unfair to you, one should greet it with glee

The lessons you learn from it will pay double if you use it to your advantage

Your greatest successes are the results of your greatest failures..................Think about that

it is unfair. Imagine doing farm work many hours a day and having to give up 35% of what you produce in rents, taxes, and tithes. But taxes of a million peasants can be used to build:

Marilyn Monroe was the epitome of imperfection. She had bad skin, crooked fat legs, a disproportionate body, cellulite and fat, fish eyes, a bulldog jaw, but she could hide all this behind her clothes with cosmetics and experienced photographers who knew how to take "good" angles.
These pot-bellied uncles with thin legs, in women's lace, "Vikings" are very similar to her in this sense. They were able to create an image of "men" for themselves, but everyone forgot about real men
