That reminds me of the book "To Hell and Back: How I Survived a Deadly Motorcycle Trip from California to the Andes" authored by Glen Heggstad. It's a good read and I highly recommend it.

He rode that route on his bike. During his trip he got kidnapped in Columbia by leftist guerilla insurgents.
