A disciplinary court imposed a $50,000 fine Thursday against former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice J. Michael Eakin for his involvement in an exchange of lewd and offensive emails.

The Court of Judicial Discipline, which was tasked with determining whether Eakin violated the Constitution and rules governing judicial behavior, concluded that Eakin "failed to promote public confidence in the judiciary" and "seriously jeopardized" its reputation.

"The common thread of the emails, with their imagery of sexism, racism, and bigotry, is arrogance and the belief that an individual is better than his or her peers," according to the court's ruling. "Such beliefs are antithetical to the privilege of holding public office, where the charge is to serve, not demean, our citizens."

Eakin, a 67-year-old Republican, participated in the email exchange between judges, prosecutors and other court officials via his private email account.

The justice's attorney, Bill Costopoulos, said his client does not plan to appeal the decision.
