Non-governmental organizations advocating freedom of speech in Nicaragua shuttered their doors last week after the country passed the “Foreign Agents Law” in October, which required organizations receiving international funds to register as foreign agents.

The Violeta B. Chamorro Foundation, an organization dedicated to freedom of expression, suspended its operations after refusing to register as a foreign agent, calling the law “unconstitutional” in a press statement.

“Therefore it is a clear manipulation that seeks to paralyze the functioning of organizations that the government considers contrary to its guidelines, in evident violation of universal human rights, freedom of thought and dissemination, democracy and the rule of law,” the organization said in a statement.

I'm not sure what the problem is. It's stupid crap like this that pisses off a lot of countries and the NGOs are in perpetual disbelief.

I think it's a good idea. The United States should require all agencies and lobbyists to register as foreign agents if they are receiving funding from outside the United States. It should also be open records if a congresscritter is dealing with them.
