Whether real or not and the negative things you see in it, it plays a role in guilt and does stop most people from committing heinous crimes. I know, there are crimes committed for religious craziness. In this modern age more people are sociopaths and do not sweat any nasty criminal acts they do and part of that is because of a decline in religious beliefs.
