I used to wonder how someone who owned property (paid off house, investments, and land), had an income, and had worked hard all their lives, could possibly be a Democrat, when the Democrat philosophy seems to consist largely of hating the successful, punishing success, and rewarding the idle, and the willfully non-working.
Still does not make sense, but now I understand them a little better.
First of all, they live in a state that is heavily Democratic, so everyone they know spends a large part of their social time talking about how much they hate Donald Trump. Literally, it was a significant percent of their talks with the wife and I, even though we carefully avoided responding and tried to change the subject during pauses.
They get no information outside of friends and liberal media.
Second of all, they pay a lot of taxes, but all of their money comes from having worked as senior government employees until retirement and then taking even higher paying jobs with firms that are contractors for the government. So 12% in sales taxes, plus state income taxes, plus "wealth tax" on the cars they own seems a small price to pay because their own income comes from taxing others thusly.
3rd, they live the classic stereotype of the (relatively) wealthy white Americans who would never view brown people as equals, but who love their domestic help, who happen to be illegal. Hard-working cleaners, and landscapers is who illegals are to them, so Abrego Garcia's deportation must have been a big misunderstanding - that the hideous Trump refuses to correct.
They lament that their yard man doesn't share much personal information and might fear they would turn him in. They love their twice a week housekeeper, but MIL follows her from room to room, talking and giving directions, but really making sure nothing is stolen.
It makes sense, from the standpoint that they have this tunnel vision and believe that they are typical, while Americans who struggle to get by under the weight of huge taxes, while watching their children pushed aside by people promoted due to skin color or LGBT status resent their Party's intrusions.
