Bobby Whitlock is dead. What is sad is that he died yesterday and no one here has even noticed. A piece of your history just faded away.

OK, so now you are asking: Who was Bobby Whitlock? You'll be ashamed to know Bobby was one of the co-founders of Derek & The Dominos whose only studio release was the apocryphal 1970 album 'Layla And Other Love Songs," having written several of the songs of the album and played keyboard and some guitar.

Derek & The Dominos also included Eric Clapton and Duane Allman (my favorite Allman Brother). The cover art was actually a painting given to Eric who then later gave it to his friend George Harrison. Layla is considered by most to be Eric Clapton's greatest musical work.

Eric left the Yardbirds in the 60s creating the opening that was later filled by Jeff Beck because Jeff's sister who knew one of the other band members recommended her brother's guitar playing.

Amazingly, while the band Derek & The Dominos toured in 1970, the band which opened for them was no less than Elton John.

Lots of great musical performers are gone now.
The longer we live the more people in general we lose.
What is bad some go so young.

Here is one with a great voice and song that passed, most thought their whole life he was black, till his video came out.

Seriously. All of those superstar rockers who made up all of the legendary rock bands of the 60s and 70s are now in their 70s, 80s and 90s, and are dropping like flies.

In another few years, practically all who made up the british invasion and redefined a generation making some of the best music this world ever saw will all be gone and just a page in the history books.

Yes and like me never been online till they were in their late 40s early 50s.
If we saw them it was at a concert, on TV show like Ed Sullivan.

Well, it is particularly painful for me as music has both played a central role in my life as well as having personally known several notable people in the industry.

Just about 2.5 years ago, I actually saw and met a bunch of them and even ended up in an unforgettable car ride with three famous people who took me to see Stonehenge.

Just too bad it was centered around the death of someone famous for their R&R exploits.

Times do change, glad you got to see and visit them.
I saw some as they got older in clubs in Atlanta, Ga. and Jacksonville, Fl..
Most I saw are gone now. Greg Alman, Ronnie Van Zant, Percy Sledge, Billy Joe Royal, Joe South who wrote many of Royals songs.Johnny and Edger Winters ,Johnny is gone now too. Not that I so found of their music but I did sit and talk to them at a club one evening. They seemed nice.
Was called up to the stage by BB King in Atlanta at the Electric Ballroom when hubby and I went to see him. He acted like a gentleman.
I never was a groupy and refused to go on stage at concerts several times. May have had something to do by my walking across the field on the shoulders of the men to get up front, I had great balance.

Johnny and Edger Winters ,Johnny is gone now too.

Johnny Winter was one of if not the very first live performer I ever saw, along with ELO I think. It was either ELO or Black Oak Arkansas.

We were in some shithole which was some small ice arena where they put down cardboard over the ice for the audience. I was about 20 feet from Johnny.

Another strange concert I'll never forget was seeing Lee Dorman of the Iron Butterfly not long before he died at the theater in Philadelphia where they filmed The Blob.

I hadn't heard a thing. Thanks for posting this. Some of my greatest memories were of driving through the country on sunny autumn days and playing this album. I always new Bobby Whitlock was a major pillar in its creation.

I wonder if there is a video where white people discover that the song they thought was sung by a white person is actually sung by a black person?
