Trump Lays Out a Vision of Power Restrained Only by ‘My Own Morality’

President Trump declared on Wednesday evening that his power as commander in chief is constrained only by his “own morality,” brushing aside international law and other checks on his ability to use military might to strike, invade or coerce nations around the world.

Asked in a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times if there were any limits on his global powers, Mr. Trump said: “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

“I don’t need international law,” he added. “I’m not looking to hurt people.”

When pressed further about whether his administration needed to abide by international law, Mr. Trump said, “I do.” But he made clear he would be the arbiter when such constraints applied to the United States.

Mr. Trump’s assessment of his own freedom to use any instrument of military, economic or political power to cement American supremacy was the most blunt acknowledgment yet of his worldview. At its core is the concept that national strength, rather than laws, treaties and conventions, should be the deciding factor as powers collide.

This would be shocking even if trump were not immoral. It gives some revealing insight in to how he views the world and his place in it. It hate the term "permission structure," though if ever it fit in describing a construct by which trump is completely unrestrained by laws, treaties and conventions, this is it.

"My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

There are a number of words to describe that. Megalomania, malignant narcissist, grandiose delusion. Here are a few more. Dangerous, deranged, perilous, deluded.

Someone who thinks like that is the last person in the world who should be in control of the most powerful military force on the planet. Made worse because the normal constraints placed on any prez by Congress and the SC are almost entirely absent thanks to R's abdication of their responsibility to the citizenry and the Constitution.

This guy needs to be removed from office immediately.

No other President with the exception of perhaps Nixon has ever made such comments. We are in trouble unless we act quiclky.
When Dick made the "if a prez does it, it means it's not against the law" remark the scope of what he referred to (Watergate) is nothing compared to powers the self appointed King Don is claiming for himself.

The latter is literally saying he decides what is right and wrong, what is lawful and unlawful. HIM! The morally bankrupt, sexual abusing rapist, the convicted criminal, the guy who tried to steal the 2020 election.

You need only understand one word when it comes to Trump, acceptance. For the next three years anyway. He's not going anywhere no matter how much you whine.

We are fortunate to have such a moderate forward thinking president. Not like the last Cold War relic.

I take that as Trump is constrained only by his imagination or choosing the best ideas presented to him.

He knows that the Constitution, congress and the courts all have checks on his ultimate authority.

Mike Johnson already told him a 3rd term isn't happening.

They forget to mention the fact he doesn't have any morals.

President Trump is correct. No country in the world would fail to act in its own interests just because some one said it was against international law. In fact, the US follows International Humanitarian Law meticulously when it is engaged in battle, but it does not allow anyone else to tell us when it is justified to go to war.

What "international law" are you referring to?

I take that as Trump is constrained only by his imagination or choosing the best ideas presented to him.

He knows that the Constitution, congress and the courts all have checks on his ultimate authority.
I guess you have not noticed Congress and the courts have surrendered their constitutional powers to Trump.

As for the "best ideas presented to him", I am not kidding when I say white nationalist Stephen Miller is running our country.

.
Mike Johnson already told him a 3rd term isn't happening.
But a 3rd impeachment might happen if this maniac doesn't reel himself in.

This post would be funny but you just actually believe it. In the 10 years of Trump on the world stage you fruit loops have made all kinds of predictions, all kinds of hate about him and nothing you claim is proven true.

What a bizarre lie from a mindless cult sheep.

Kamala and Hillary nailed virtually every prediction, for example.

Liar.

Spoken like the true ignorant bloviating asshole you are.

Anyway, nobody gives a shit about Dim Impeachments of President Trump.

All just grist for their pathetic propaganda mills. No substance. And no chance of a Senate conviction. Thankfully.

Putting aside the argument you're making, a derivative of "might makes right," imagine how you'd react if a Dem prez said "My own mind. It's the only thing that can stop me." No problem with that?
