Egypt has a pretty diverse population. just because there are large scale protests of the Morsi government in the cities doesn't mean that Islamists aren't very popular in the country in general.

the middle ground folks that were part of the constituents assembly quit due to Morsi going to far Islamist, article 36 etc. ..........

A vast majority of the people's assembly were Islamists. All of the non-Islamist seat holders added together didn't even total half of what the Muslim Brotherhood had alone.

Also, Article 36 actually wasn't really that bad in terms of historical Egyptian lawsets. Article 2 of Egypt's old constitution set Islam and shariah up as a legal source. Article 36 of the draft would have fallen in line with that (well depending on which draft we are talking about).

The protection against strong sharia has always resided not in the constitution itself (which has long been Islamist) but in the judiciary's interpretation of what constitutes legitimate Islamic sources for sharia. (aka how strong the hadiths' have to be).

It dealt with female equality under the law as long as it didn't violate Islamic jurisprudence (If I am remembering it correctly). Obviously that's not going to be popular with non-Islamists, but Egypt is also overwhelmingly an Islamist country. All of the "moderate" parties combined couldn't even equal half of the seats that the Muslim Brotherhood alone held in the 2011 elections.

Major difference. We propped up Mubarek for 30 years, ever since he stepped over Sadat's dead body to seize power.

So when it was clear that all factions in Egypt had enough of him, we had to abandon him.

In this fight between Morsi vs. the Protestors vs. the Military, we don't have a dog in that fight.

Morsi took power with just over 13% of the vote. That means 87% of the voters didn't want him. This happened because there were 17 candidates running. Morsi can hardly claim some kind of mandate.

It is a tough gig to be the US president. People will blame you if you do something about the inner politics of nations. But same people will blame you if you do nothing about inner politics of other nations also.

Don't matter if you are a democrat or a republican, you are responsible for anything and everything that comes to happening on this rock spinning through nothingness.

US did intervene with Egypt, against islamic movement, through its long lasting dictators(Kissinger policies). People did not like that.

US did not intervene and islamic movement got popular vote. And people did not like that either.

You have to realize something. Politics is all about money. Whoever can provide food and shelter to the poor, will win any elections, even if they are communists. So Americans can overwhelm ANY election in middle east shit hole with their tax dollaresssss.....
