Everyone got their NY Day luncheon planned?

Been a family tradition to have Pork and Sauerkraut for the first big meal of the year.

according to grandma, "It is bad luck to eat chicken on New Year’s Day, because they scratch backwards and if you do, you’ll be going backwards all year long. You must eat pork, because pigs root forward with their snouts."

Wife hates kraut, so I usually pick up a small can.

and yes, I'm ready for tomorrow.

Oh, my! Has your wife ever had good homemade fermented kraut?

I used to hate the canned crap we'd get at the store and then I learned to make it at home and totally changed the way I see kraut! I love it with almost any pork.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've got some homemade kraut and some frozen kielbasa. Had forgotten all about this.

Kielbasi has always been a favorite around here. Of course, kielbasi is made from the finest cuts of fresh pork specially spiced and smoked.

Hmmm. I have a ring of Kielbasi in the fridge, but no kraut.

OhPleaseJustQuit Whats your recipe, if you don't mind sharing?

How do you forget you have those? I better take them off your hands.
.

I'd share. I have three precious quarts of kraut.

It's easy to forget about the kielbasa because it's not my favorite brand.

But I'd share.

Well, you need at least three or four days to get the kraut started.

Here's a simple recipe.

Although that recipe is very simple, I prefer to use a fermentation set-up, like this.

You just mix the shredded cabbage with salt and mash the sauerkraut until it lets go of the liquid in the cabbage. Then cover it with a cabbage leaf to keep oxygen out. The fermentation starts when you can see bubbling. When the bubbling slows down -- usually about 3 days for me -- it's ready to eat, but you can also chill it and eat it whenever.

Oh, my favorite has caraway seed. If there's some allspice in your kielbasa, the combination is dynamite!

Our tradition is to eat a piece of herring around midnight. It can be a little before or after midnight...just as long as it's before you go to sleep.

Word on the street (from my mom) is that it makes you healthy wealthy and wise for the new year.

My brother called me today & said he went tot he store for herring only...and that was the one thing he forgot to get.

I said...welp, it was nice knowing you! Can I have your stereo? :D

Hoppin' John is our NYD tradition around here.

BLackeyed peas and hog jowls in the tradition here.
That's one tradition I'm glad that died in my family.....I despise black-eyed peas.

I suspect it was all they could afford during the depression.

I never developed a taste for them but I love lentials....Go figure. :dunno:
