I don't live in NYC so really not much of my business. Just for discussion, if I did I would have long fought to end mayoral control of the schools. If I had voted for Mamdani over this issue I think a long protest would be called for and I would never vote for him again.

That noted, many condemning his flop on this issue refuse to hold their elected officials responsible when they do it but are right on it when others do so.

Just because he appointed someone doesn't mean he intends to be an "authoritarian" w/r/t the schools. Look at Trump and the Department of Education; he appointed someone to basically close it down or shrink it dramatically.

School Boards in the U.S. are a curious and sometimes infuriating phenomenon. Mostly unpaid, they get a collection of would-be political hacks, lawyers looking for work, and loud-mouthed, unqualified "housewives" hoping to get special treatment for their own kids.

And speaking of housewives, in a society where most children have two working parents, input to the Schools from "parents" gives over-sized influence to non-working mothers who have little to do but complain about their kids' education. They freeze-out working mothers by scheduling events for 10 a.m. on workdays and giving them virtually no chance of earning a position in parent-teacher organizations.

Viewed from a distance, the NYC schools have a lot of history to be proud of, with various scholars and talent programs that have historically given slots on a MERIT basis. That's where Mamdani can **** things up, and it appears that that is his intention. Anyone promoting DEI in schools is, for all practical purposes, evil.
