I've mentioned this before, but the fact is that I teach at an inner city school of just the sort that would literally scare the likes of Bobo or Brokeloser to death. They would piss themselves before setting foot in the school.

I had been out sick for a couple of weeks (until this Monday), which I hate. All day long Monday, students (and staff) were asking after me and offering to help. I couldn't walk down the hallway without someone running up and grabbing my stuff to carry it to the next class for me. This one big, hulking kid always stops by my classroom to chat at least once a day. I think because I'm one of the only teachers not afraid of him. He would have carried me to my next class if I let him.

My last class of the day yesterday makes those "scary" 70s movies look like a Disney musical. I teach them because many of the other teachers in school are afraid to. As I entered the room, they broke out in applause. They rushed to do everything they could for me. Usually a boisterous group, they were quiet and focused. If I had to get up to do anything, at least one student would jump up to do it for me. When I had to make a call to another department, I picked up the receiver and a student stepped in and dialed the number for me.

Good kids, good will. Don't buy into stereotypes.

Kids know who care about them and who don't. Keep doing what you've been doing!

we all need to remember that troubled kids are still just kids .. there's a lot of good and promise in most of them that can be cultivated ..
