NFL fires three officials, relegates them to college ranks in unprecedented move, per report

Corrupt betting sites. DOJ needs to investigate hockey too, put heat on them.

If the poor officiating is simply the quality of the refs, that’s bad enough.

But if it’s because of the insidious insertion of sports gambling, then it’s far worse.

The NFL has to do a lot more (and a lot better) with regard to all the absurd officiating. Maybe retrain all of them?

But as long as it’s “NY” that blows the calls, and we all get to see the obvious nature of the wrongness of those calls, the NFL is undermining its own image.

We need technology to improve the accuracy of the calls.

Lasers should measure first downs, not the archaic chain gang.

Only one or two refs should be on the ground, and off the field during plays. The rest should be in a booth with hitech replay viewers allowing them to GET THE CALLS RIGHT, which would only affect the "hurry up offense."

Thing is you don't know who's really making the calls these days. The refs or some sports book betting revenue beholding guys sitting in NY.

I think the NFL should go back to no challenges, no NY second guessing, and calls on the field standing as called. Get former refs out of the broadcast booth too.

On the whole and given the speed of the game these days I think the refs do a pretty decent job.

But yeah, Buffalo got robbed. ;)

Personally I don't think betting has anything to do with it at that level. Point shaving in basketball is the real concern, but the thing is legalized gambling opens up the whole process to scrutiny, allowing the sites themselves and their auditors to see strange betting trends that indicate some form of cheating.

Remember gambling was always going on, but it was done underground and far more decentralized, making it harder to see shady money moves when people actually do try to influence an outcome.

Remember a good bookie doesn't make money off the losers, he makes money off the vig.

The NFL needs to make every play reviewable, especially non-calls on pass interference. Give each coach three challenges per half on non-calls and two in overtime, in addition to their two regular challenges.
