New sensors make Kelly Drive speedsters stop at red

Determined to deter speeders, the city Streets Department has imbedded sensors in the roadway, three of them in each lane about 6 feet apart in both directions approaching Fountain Green Drive. They read the average speed the motorist is going and send the reading to receivers on top of the traffic light.

"If the speed's above a certain threshold over the speed limit then we trigger a red," Montanez said.

So does this mean that speeders will start going through red lights?

I can imagine the editorial cartoon with every car sitting at a red light.

Why is the system $11,000? Can't they do it any cheaper with an Arduino, a few sensors and some wire?

That's the stupidest thing I've read all day. Next thing you know the city council of that town will demand that the local "Fudruckers" be renamed "Butt Fuckers". For heavens sake.

I can't imagine people getting to work on time. Everyone will be in a traffic jam.

So...now the speeders will know the light has been triggered...and go faster!

Or someone will do a huge burnout on the sensors and destroy them.
