I went into my local shop a bit late this morning and the owner said.....You want a free gun?

He handed me a very distressed .22 Remington No. 6 Rolling Block some guy just gave him to get rid of.

Note that the stock was put on, then taped UPSIDE DOWN!

Well, ever willing to accept a challenge I took it home.

I got all the tape off it and discovered the stock was attached by a stock bolt and it was cracked six ways to Sunday.

I guess water got to it and swelled the cracks so I stabilized them the best I could, scrapped the finish off and stained it.

The metal was crusty but not all that bad, so I got that cleaned-up. The action was a bit stiff with rust so I took it apart and cleaned it. Works fine now.

The barrel was plugged with mud mason's mud so I cleaned it out and found a pretty fair bore.

The stock wrist was stable but cracked so bad I just wrapped it in vet tape for a smooth grip.....I'll put some finish on the stock then wrap the wrist in brown eel skin when it comes in.

I did cheat a bit and put a through bolt in the wrist....Solid now.

I put it back together and here is the result.

Meh, the price was right and it gave me something to do this afternoon.

That stock looks nearly split in two. I would never tape it. I would at least glue it, fill it, sand it to hide the split or more likely, make or buy a whole new stock.

A used stock is the first thing I thought of....Fuck that, $100+.

Parts for the Model 6 are expensive....A used forend is $90.00.....The UMC butt plate $75.00.

BTW....That's the stock's "good" side! At least it's right side up now and shoots straight. ;)

Way too much money for those parts. I'm very killed with wood and have my own machine shop and wood shop and could make that stuff dirt cheap. These people are making money hand over fist.

That split could be glue-injected, then filled with saw dust such that when stained, would resemble the surrounding wood, hide the crack, and be strong without need for tape nor bolt.

Me, I'd probably just get some walnut, or rock maple or whatever from my cousin's hardwood planning mill and just make a whole new stock from scratch using the old one as a template. Shouldn't be hard to hog that shape out and have it finished within a few days, good as new.

Maybe artificially "age" it a little to make it look like it isn't new and belongs with the gun. New owner will never know the difference. :SMILEW~130:

Hint: Long ago, I used to do antique furniture restoration. We excelled at fixing damaged old stuff that you'd never see the repairs.

All I was bothered about was making it a solid shooter....I damn sure was not gonna spend any money on it.

I had ordered the eel skin for another project and there will be plenty left over for the stock.
