If you will pardon the pay-wall, the small public portion of this WSJ article is sufficient to reveal this ludicrous attempt by compromised college basketball coaches to have even greater access to high school athletes who have NO BUSINESS being in a college classroom, other than to empty the trash cans.

Despite many years of desperate attempts to do so, critics of the SAT and ACT have yet to find a single question on either test that has anything to do with race, or would impair the attempt by anyone of any race to discern the correct answer through prior knowledge or problem-solving ability. There is no "cultural bias" in either test, and in fact the people who write the tests are Leftists just like the critics. But predictably, when there is no visible racism the disparate results must be due to the mythical and undefinable phenomenon of "institutional racism."

The bastardization of college "education" to accommodate college sports (which exists in no other country in the world) is one that approaches the academic and cultural damage done by the generation of Vietnam draft dodgers who now control the halls of Academe.

A pox on the NBA for refusing to establish a minor league system comparable to baseball's system, in order to develop those Yoots talented enough to deserve a chance, but too dimwitted to go to college. Same for the NFL.

Racist or not I do not think the ACT's or SAT's are the best way to determine eligibility either. There are some very smart people who simply are not good at taking tests.

Those "Vietnam draft dodgers" are long since retired. I could have retired long ago, and did, and I am 3 years older than these quote "draft dodgers" you claim exist. Bill Clinton is the only true draft dodger I know and how old is he?

The draft ended in 1973, which is 47 years ago. Age 18 years of age to that and you get 65. You know college professors usually retire in the 50s, right?

The brutal truth is always hurtful.

That is why nice people tend to keep their mouths shut or just smile politely when they are in public.

Yes, we all know that most college athletes do not belong at the university as "students." They are there for only one reason: To play basketball, football, etc.

In fact, maybe it's a good idea to get rid of all the hypocrisy. Let those talented students enter without any qualifications. Let them play sports and make money for the college. Then give them diplomas with gentleman C's. Americans are not stupid: They know that those diplomas that most athletes are currently "earning" are bogus.

Yeah, tell that to all of the doctors who were college athletes. Put away that broad brush.

That may well be true, but fellows like Dubya and The Donald who attended snooty boarding schools and B. Hussein O who graduated the most elite prep school in the Pacific Rim, will have a lot more academic preparation for college than someone who attended Ghetto High, where it was a meaningful accomplishment to escape a shiv in the eye.

This isn't about intelligence in my view, but its about preparedness.

But those pesky ACT/SAT tests are a hindrance to the Universities' efforts to acquire their preferred breed of "student athletes".

There really isn't much of a need of someone like the top recruits to know the square root of 169. I actually believe that college isn't even the best venue for many but that is the system right now.

Nonsense. That's just an old excuse for the incapable.

If you know the material, you pass the test.

Anecdotal examples mean very little but I know a guy who knew the business I work at forwards and backwards. (He was a contract employee). He simply could not pass a test for some reason. A couple supervisors stepped in to get him hired anyway. He is one of the best employee's we have.

A needle in a haystack does not grant support for the excuse.

Like it or not, there is only one way to assess the progress of any student of anything. A test. And when you are talking about academic stuff, the test form is pretty much gonna be a written test. I hear people speaking about those who "just can't take a test," but I have my doubts. If you know the material you will be able to demonstrate that on a test. It may be that the written test does not capture everything needed to perform in a practical situation, but that's a defect in the test itself.

....

Bullshit.

It is too cynical to say that "most college student-athletes" are academically deficient. Since the advent of the infamous Title IX, there are lots of female college "athletes" on scholarship - decent students all - playing the silly games that now are passed off as "sports."

Nevertheless, when Manly Men speak of "scholarship athletes" the intended subject is Div. I basketball and football players.

Even if most of them are legitimate "college material," it is sufficient to say that MANY of them - indeed, the core of many of the most prominent teams in both sports - are not "college material." They are only kept academically eligible by the availability of lots of tutoring, lots of bullshit courses and majors, and - dare I say it? - a bit of academic cheating. "Just write a paper, and we'll treat that as your final exam" [wink, wink].

The bitter envy (and ignorance, not to mention sexism) of the 98lb weakling squeaks up again.

Not sure if I understand what it is that I would be envious of.

Dimwitted athletes, the high point of whose lives was playing a child's game at age 20? Looking back from the janitorial closet for another 40 years, thinking about how great it was to be a star?

Apparently, of men and women with physical skills you could never aspire to, who benefitted from their natural gifts and many years of hard work and sacrifice. Your inferiority complex is embarrassingly obvious.
