A headline in yesterday's local Sunday edition read:
<center><h1>Can America Rebuild Iraq?</h1></center>
Well, for the answer to that, we need look no further than Afghanistan. Since the Administratiom rolled up the Taliban and Al Qaeda operations there, chaos has ruled. Regional warlords control huge swaths of the country-side. Their rule is little better than that of the Taliban. Internecine rivalries that were forgotten during the Russian occupation, and simmering during the rule of the Taliban, have sprung forth in full bloom. Witness the recent assassination of the air-transport minister. Women's rights are a fantasy largely ignored outside of Kabul. The Talban and Al Qaeda are making a resurgence in southern Afghanistan. Hamid Kharzhai, Afghanistan's President is, in reality, little more than the Mayor of Kabul.
So, with this sterling record of achievements to build on, the only thing I can foresee in the Administrations's nation building in Iraq is that the Iraqi people are in a world of shit.
