A few thoughts and observations

We on the “left” do not take medical transitioning lightly and do not believe that it is something to rush into...contrary to the right wing propaganda that you people spew

We understand that the social contagion aspect of it is real and therefore, all the more important to go slowly and carefully

At the same time, many young people are experience gender dysphoria – not as a peer encouraged fad- but because of very real underlying biological reasons or other gender determining factors that we do not fully comprehend. Those people are in desperate need of appropriate gender affirming care. They are also at risk of declining mental health if that care is withheld

The linked article does not provide enough information to evaluate the actual meaning of the finding- that mental heath deteriorated after transitioning. It claims to be derived from a study but there is no link to the actual study or description of how it was conducted

1. The author cites “ a large number of parents report...” but does not state what that number is or if it is statistically significant
2. There is no mention of a control group( ie. Children who were not transitioned) and their mental health outcomes in relation to the study group
3. It is mentioned that many of the transitioned children had preexisting mental health issues but the role of those issues is not discussed. They are not controlled for as intervening variables
4. The parents were pressured into allowing the kids to transition? Pressured by who? The children? Regardless, what kind of parent gives into pressure to allow such drastic intervention without a strong a recommendation from mental health and medical professionals. I would guess few. Yet the “study” which is really an opinion piece just says “many parents”
5. There is no information regarding ages of the children, how long they had been expressing their feelings of gender dysphoria, or the extent to which they received proper evaluation and support before transitioning
6. We know that many transpeople have mental health challenges as the result of societal reaction to them- and other outside forces, yet the “{declining mental health” of those who transitioned is assumed to be the result of transitioning. Correlation is being conflated with causation.

For most transgender youth, gender-affirming care starts with therapy and simple changes to things like clothing and hairstyle.
