Commentary:
No reason to assume they are alive. The hostages were as good as dead as soon as they were taken.
if by some miracle they aren't dead we can rest assured every second of their captivity they have prayed for death with the atrocities that's been done to them.
For the time being, the hostages may remain alive. A live hostage has value. However, once it looks like the Israelis might rescue them. Then Hamas will murder the whole bunch.
It is well known that the Muslim Koran encourages lying to non-Muslims for personal gain. Can't trust anything they say. Their words only have value to the extent one can logically extract the truth from the lie.
Note:
"Lying to the Kafir is called Taqiyya, which is considered a virtue in Islam and is used to advance Islam’s cause. Islam sees itself in perpetual jihad (struggle) against the Kafir. Kafirs are considered lower than dogs or pigs and it is protected under Sharia law to rape them, and even to murder them. Therefore, lying to them is of course small potatoes".
In this case, probably they are trying to further delay the ground war and there is a good chance most the hostages are dead.
