If the capital of the United States cannot maintain a reasonable crime rate, then perhaps it's time to consider relocating it. A new capital—ideally in the central part of the country—could be designed with no permanent residents, only public servants and temporary staff. The land would be entirely government-owned, dedicated to the business of the people. The old district would be returned to its original owner, the state of Maryland. We, the American people, deserve a capital city we can be proud of—safe, functional, and worthy of its name.

Please vote and indicate whether you consider yourself a liberal, a moderate, a conservative, or something else. I'm curious how this idea would be accepted across the political spectrum.

Pointless thread. It would take an act of congress.

Well, I really screwed this one up. I don't know how I did it or how to fix it. All I can say is, my laptop is acting screwy—so be advised.

Congress might well go for it, at least the reasonable members of the body.

Although I have faith that President Trump will be able to bring his capital under control crime-wise, the possibility of moving it to a more reasonably priced area of the country makes a good deal of sense.

Further, since the District of Columbia both wants statehood and is pissed about their constitutional status in the federal government, relieving the area of the government would be a good first step in that goal.

Yeah, technically it would require Congress and the president to sign off. But this is just a thought experiment—I don’t expect it to actually happen. I was more curious how folks from different political camps might react to the idea.

Just move the traitors out of the Capitol by enforcing America's laws.

Look, if it were moved, it would just end up the same way unless certain problems are solved with government accountability, and if they can be solved, then they should be solved right there.

There is too much invested in DC to just move it all.

Yeah...and turn the land into a prison colony.

Like Devil's Island or some colorful name like that.

Constitutional amendment required.
The Constitution says nothing about moving the capital, returning the land to Maryland, or any provisions regarding the current location. The land was chosen by political compromise, not by constitutional mandate. Maryland and Virginia each willingly ceded territory to the federal government—it wasn’t taken. Now, you're probably right that the federal government could not simply take property from a state to establish a new capital. That would require the consent of any state involved, as well as an act of Congress and the president’s signature. However, it would require a constitutional amendment to make D.C. a state—it could not be done by an act of Congress, ordinary legislation, or anything short of a constitutional amendment.

That’s exactly what was designed originally. DC was located in the geographic center of the country at the time and it was a federal jurisdiction. Granting home rule and government expansion created the disaster it’s become.
Relocating would only become an opportunity for an annex expansion for our creepy crappy politicians.

The jist is "end the capitol"...aka "end capitalism" But capitalism is not the enemy. Capitalism is the savior. Clean, sweet, and wholesome. [<= 😍]

Naw, it has never been discussed, although it does not matter. Americanism does not reside in Washington D.C. It resides in the hearts and souls of every single American and every single American Dreamer. We all are dreamers, and all will fight for that dream: equality, justice, p[syumthinging or other]

China is making a city called XiongAn. It's basically Xi's way of wasting money so people remember him. As far as I could tell the government was supposed to own everything and you could only rent from the government. Seems like the sort of thing Trump will be proposing.

The area covers the counties of Xiong, Rongcheng and Anxin. Its name is a compound of the first elements of the names of two of them: Xiong and Anxin.

Written in Chinese it is 雄安 Xióng ān

The General Secretary's name is written 习近平 -- totally different characters and pronunciation. It is in no way named after China's current GS.
