Mississippi has turned their school system around, picking up ALL students by keeping things simple and accountable. They have a 2 prong approach:

  1. Kids not performing get left back
  2. Focus on reading
Amazing I know!

We had the same system in place when I attended public schools in the Bronx. I think only one kid ever repeated a grade

Interesting results. Reading is a huge boon to ones learning. It's akin to working out for the brain plus it drives learning of new information obviously.

MS ranks 49th lowest in teacher union membership.

Virginia ranks 47th. We have good schools.

Seems to me there is your problem....The lower the teacher union membership rate in a state, the better the schools.
Correlation is not causation. Take a stats class!

They upped their budget and spent some money, mostly federal money.

Maybe watch the video in the OP before responding

You get results that you measure. They got away from One Size Fits All education and focused on reading and outcomes.

The numbers of kids getting left back has also plummeted

The USA outspent every other nation in education and our results get progressively and consistently worse ever year since the inception of the Federal Department of “Education”

Weird how making sure your students know how to read can really improve your outcomes across the board.

Wrong and no it’s not. MA, NJ, CT all have high union participation and are all top education states.

Here is a scatter plot and it shows BETTER results with MORE union teachers.

Whether or not influence by the teacher unions is a factor, that illustrates that school systems do not need a teacher union to be effective.

They are very effective at their true purpose - funneling $$$ to democrat politicians.

I'd like to think that we are finally bouncing back from Covid, but much more data will be needed.
