It depends what to count as a sucess. If the goal is independece of Ukraine/California, yes, that kind of sucess is hardly achievable (at least without a devastating nuclear war). But if we count as success hundreds of thousands killed Russians (including Ukrainians) and Americans (including Californians) - it may be achievable.

It depends on criteria of victory. Will you keep California? Yes. Will you keep America? Not necessarily.

It dependent of the definition of "resonable cost". Previous time, the price of liberation of Ukraine was 7 million killed. This time it will be much lesser than 1 mln killed. What price are we ready to pay for the independence of California? No more than 1 mln Russians killed, I believe. Can we invest, say, some thousands of "mercenaries" to decrease American capabilities to fight a war abroad or even keep a Credible Retaliation Capability? Yes, we can.
