Looks like the Republicans in the Senate are looking at potential adjustments to Medicare as part of their version of the BBB. It will be interesting to see what they do and the reception in the House to it.

Medicare changes on table for big, beautiful bill, says GOP senator

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, on Thursday said GOP lawmakers are looking at changes to Medicare to root out waste, fraud and abuse.

Republican senators are taking a closer look at finding savings in Medicare to increase the total amount of deficit reduction in President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” Tillis said a day after the Finance panel met with Trump at the White House.

The Congressional Budget Office released a report this week estimating that the House-passed 1,116-page bill would add $2.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Tillis says that overhauling systems at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) could save a substantial amount of money without impacting Medicare benefits, which Trump has said should not be cut. He said that legislation sponsored by Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-N.C.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) to reduce Medicare Advantage overpayments could be included into the bigger bill.

“Waste, fraud and abuse, you’ve got upcoding,” Tillis said. “Even in the plumbing of CMS — and by that I mean, procurement, matching up contracts, duplicate payments — there are a number of things that I think that we could find that never touch a beneficiary of Medicare or Medicaid that we’re going to go after.”

I remember saying this is what I would do. Demand cuts but also hold agency heads responsible for not actually cutting benefits.

Seems I was slammed for that.

Its a good idea now?

Too bad they won't do that. They'll be ordered to cut their budgets, and they'll take it out of benefits, instead of rooting out the corruption that lines their pockets.

Then they'll blame Trump, and dumbasses like you will agree,

Its an idea most conservative repubs would support

And already did before you came along

rick scott will lead the way.

If the GOP senators for Medicaid retention stay united, the House will have to give in, I think, on that issue.

CBO estimates are a joke, but even $2.4 trillion over 10 years is only $240 billion per year and less than 10% of the current national debt. If the US economy can grow enough to result in continuing balanced budgets, the nominal debt amount won't be that important.

It never has. Why would it now?

The fraud comes from charging for higher cost procedures than what was actually done.

Sens. Rick Scott, Mike Braun and J.D. Vance Demand Full Audit of Medicare over $2.7 Billion in Medical Fraud. March 13, 2024. WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senators Rick Scott, Mike Braun and J.D. Vance sent a letter to Comptroller General Dodaro of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) demanding an audit of Medicare, following reports of the $2.7 billion Medicare catheter fraud ring and the estimated $60 billion lost to Medicare fraud a year.

May 9, 2024 — Scott is seeking to reframe a decades-old fraud case against Columbia/HCA, though he previously said he was responsible for mistakes.

But U.S. Sen. Rick Scott went out of his way, quite literally, on Thursday to attend former President Donald Trump’s hush-money trial in Manhattan and remind Americans that he once ran a healthcare company that was slapped with the largest Medicare fraud fine in U.S. history.

In a press conference outside the courthouse in Manhattan where Trump is on trial, Scott compared the criminal charges against Trump to the federal Medicare and Medicaid fraud investigation that resulted in $1.7 billion in fines against Columbia/HCA, the healthcare company that helped make Scott the United States’ wealthiest U.S. senator. Earlier, in an interview on “Fox & Friends,” Scott claimed that the charges against Trump — who’s accused of falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment to a porn star — amount to “political persecution.” He said that he too had been a victim of a politically influenced justice system more than two decades ago.

LARGEST HEALTH CARE FRAUD CASE IN U.S. HISTORY SETTLED
HCA INVESTIGATION NETS RECORD TOTAL OF $1.7 BILLION

WASHINGTON, D.C. - HCA Inc. (formerly known as Columbia/HCA and HCA - The Healthcare Company) has agreed to pay the United States $631 million in civil penalties and damages arising from false claims the government alleged it submitted to Medicare and other federal health programs, the Justice Department announced today.

This settlement marks the conclusion of the most comprehensive health care fraud investigation ever undertaken by the Justice Department, working with the Departments of Health and Human Services and Defense, the Office of Personnel Management and the states. The settlement announced today resolves HCA's civil liability for false claims resulting from a variety of allegedly unlawful practices, including cost report fraud and the payment of kickbacks to physicians.

Previously, on December 14, 2000, HCA subsidiaries pled guilty to substantial criminal conduct and paid more than $840 million in criminal fines, civil restitution and penalties. Combined with today's separate administrative settlement with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), under which HCA will pay an additional $250 million to resolve overpayment claims arising from certain of its cost reporting practices, the government will have recovered $1.7 billion from HCA, by far the largest recovery ever reached by the government in a health care fraud investigation.

But a previously unreported lawsuit alleges that the payments Jim Biden received were improper. In a complaint filed in Palm Beach County in 2022, investors in the Third Friday Total Return Fund allege that the money manager in charge of the fund looted millions of dollars from it by making sham loans to Americore, then diverted roughly $600,000 of the embezzled funds to Jim Biden.

Jim Biden is not named as a defendant in the Palm Beach suit, and it is not clear whether his activities are a focus in either criminal investigation.

The White House referred a request for comment to Jim Biden’s representatives. Through a spokesperson, Jim Biden’s lawyer, Paul Fishman, said “Jim Biden is not being investigated by federal law enforcement in Florida or Pennsylvania,” and that he was unaware of any ongoing or recent executive branch investigations of his client.

If a friend of a friend of a friend were guilty ALL republicans would be in jail.
