just because you do something heroic, doesn't mean you win a medal of honor.
just because your commander nominates you for a medal of honor, doesn't mean you'll get one.
there had to be several witnesses and several requirements before the president hands out a medal of honor.

the modern historical revisionists, held a "review", chose some blacks, ,Mexicans, and jews, ...and they're on TV telling everyone "they weren't given a medal of honor because of prejudice"

what ever reasons they weren't given the highest honor is now lost in the paperwork.

some of these people won the 2nd highest medal.
now, what would be the freaking point of being "prejudice" against someone and not giving them the 1st award, but giving them the 2nd highest instead.

you guys can believe this horse pucky if you want, but I don't.

creating racist stories were they never existed.

Its good pr – nothing more. What do you expect?

I could care less either way – the president gets his photo op and a few people get a shiny piece of metal for something that they have accomplished. No one is really hurt but then again, nothing really good comes out of it either.

I have always found medals completely disingenuous and asinine myself anyway. Oh, you got a leg blown off? Well here is a purple heart.

**** you, give me my leg back.

You volunteered.

You knew the score.

So, thanks for your service and stop bitching.

You could be dead.

?

That was incredibly asinine. Methinks that you did not understand a single thing that I said.

Look, a medal is nice and all but recognition after the fact is empty in my book. It comes with essentially nothing and, at the end of the day, means little. Many feel differently than I do and that's fine but I don't really see the value in being handed a piece of metal.

Far better is seeing the people through your travels that shake your hand and thank you - they actually mean it. I doubt the politician is thinking about anything other than the photo op.

I want bitching by the way but the 2 lines at the end - **** you if that's the best that you can come up with. Sorry, but that is asinine.

No, a medal is a recognition of your valor. Frankly, a statement like the above indicates to me you probably never served.

Indicate away.

I am currently serving so apparently you have no idea what you are talking about.

**** you, give me my leg back.

I would have given more blood than I did ... More of my insides than I did.
I would have given both arms, legs ... And even my life if it meant we could have a few of my friends back.

**** you instead ... *****!

Ah, so it's knocking heroic military valor day at USMB...

*sigh*

I am in no way knocking valor.
Yes, you are. You called the medals received and the three remaining living recipients aactions worthy of receiving them bull pucky.

Like this hero:

Rodela, now of San Antonio, was a 31-year-old company commander of a Special Forces strike group on Sept. 1, 1969, in Phuoc Long Province, Vietnam, when he and his company of Cambodian soldiers whom he had helped recruit came under fire from North Vietnamese Army troops.

Sgt. First Class Jose Rodela is awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama during a ceremo Â…

According to his Medal of Honor citation and supporting documents, the battle lasted 18 hours and 11 men in his company were killed and 33 others wounded.

The citation states that late in the battle, Rodela "was the only member of his company who was moving and he began to run from one position to the next, checking for casualties and moving survivors into different positions in an attempt to form a stable defense line.

Throughout the battle, in spite of his wounds, Rodela repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to attend to the fallen and eliminate an enemy rocket position."

In an interview with the Army News Service last December, he said simply, "We trained for this and I would have done it again."

And these heroes:

Erevia, also of San Antonio, was cited for courage while serving as a radio-telephone operator on May 21, 1969, during a search-and-clear mission near Tam Ky, South Vietnam. He was a specialist 4 when his battalion tried to take a hill fortified by Viet Cong and North Vietnam Army soldiers. The Pentagon says he single-handedly silenced four Viet Cong bunkers.

As for the medal, he told the publication Soldier Live last month, "I'm only thankful I'm getting it while I'm alive."

Among those who received a posthumous medal was Leonard Kravitz, an assistant machine gunner in the Korean War who is credited with saving his platoon by providing cover for retreating troops. He died in the attack. He is the uncle of singer and actor Lenny Kravitz, who attended Tuesday's ceremony.

The study was ordered by Congress in 2002 - doof.

Here's a fun fact:

Roundabout 1993 people were asking why no black soldier had received the Medal of Honor in World War II.

Congress ordered its first study then.

In 1997, medals were awarded:

Medals of Honor Awarded at Last To Black World War II Soldiers

By JAMES BENNET
Published: January 14, 1997

Half a century after most of them died in combat, seven men today were awarded the Medals of Honor that they were denied after World War II because they were black.

''The only thing that I can say to those that are not here with me is, Thank you, fellas, well done,'' Joseph Vernon Baker, the only one of the decorated soldiers who is still living, said after a ceremony at the White House. ''And I will always remember you.''

Their courage and ability routinely derided by white officers, the soldiers honored today fought in segregated units, protecting freedoms they did not fully share.

But the talk among their widows and children was more about lessons learned by all than about family bitterness or years of impatient waiting for recognition."

Regarding the 1993 Congressional study:

“It was a pretty persuasive document that said yes, in all likelihood, or without doubt, racial discrimination in the Army, in all of the services, ended up creating this imbalance,” Richard Kohn, a former Pentagon executive and one of the researchers, told America Tonight.

The study paved the way for other reviews of different groups of minority soldiers overlooked for the military’s highest honor because of politics or prejudice.

In 2002, the National Defense Authorization Act ordered the Army to review all of the Jewish and Hispanic soldiers who had received the Distinguished Service Cross from World War II onward, to see if any had deserved the nation’s highest honor."

Conversely just because you win a medal it doesn't mean you did something heroic. A brief look at MacArthur's MOH citation, awarded shortly after he abandoned his Troops at Battan and Corrigador, indicates nothing that could be called "uncommon valor". The only indication of valor is the foolish act of emerging from his dugout on Corrigador to shake his fist at a marauding Zero. MacArthur's MOH was clearly a political favor.

Right on target! Fire for effect.

As someone who wrote medal applications and citations, I can attest to the fact that most are NOT awarded for any specific act but a way for commanders to look good.

I will NEVER belittle the MOH but it seems somewhat odd to me that, at a time when his poll numbers are in the toilet, he somehow finds a way to enter the limelight making a big deal out of the bravery of blacks and Hispanics.

With that in mind, what about all those heroic American/Japanese who gave up the blood and guts fighting in Italy during WWII. Did any of them get anything higher than The Silver Star?
