Ghislaine Maxwell, the former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, urged the Supreme Court on Monday to take up her pending appeal and overturn her sex-trafficking conviction, claiming she was covered by an agreement Epstein made with federal authorities that shielded her from prosecution.
This really wouldn't be much of a news story if the Epstein conspiracy theories were not so much in the news already. No doubt her attorney is looking for publicity, either for himself or for his client's cause or both.
Apparently, when Epstein pled guilty to state charges, it was under a non-prosecution agreement with the Feds. Maxwell claims that the agreement included her and other associates of Epstein.
It either does or it does not, that should be easy to determine. But the government's case is that the agreement was made with the Florida wing of the DOJ, and so the New York DOJ is not bound by it.
In her appeal at the Supreme Court, filed in April, Maxwell argues she should have been covered by a non-prosecution agreement Epstein secured as part of his agreement to plead guilty. The New York-based 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Maxwell, finding that the agreement made with prosecutors in Florida did not bind the authorities in New York.
I don't think the USSC will let Maxwell go in a million years, especially with the news lately. But I find that argument to be nonsensical about the Florida Federal Government rather than the New York Federal government. We don't have state or regional federal governments, we have one Federal Government.
It's called "The Federal Government," not "the several Federal Governments."
The real question is why would the government make such a deal? Why let off people who helped Epstein with his crimes?
The conspiratorial answer is obvious: Put the leader in the lockup, and let the other go on condition they keep their mouths shut, in which case they go to the slammer also. Then provide them with a lesson in what happens to Epsteiners who go to the slammer.
