For hardcopy books, print-on-demand publishing has also gotten quite reasonable. IngramSpark and Amazon CreateSpace are the two big names in that area.

Self-publishing is definitely the way to go these days, as it costs very little. It has some stigma of self-promotion in the academic world, but that doesn't sound like a problem for you. Presuming you put together a PDF file of a good book, the issue on your part then becomes promoting it, as you won't have a publisher to handle promotion.

Go to the bookstore and look at other fine art books. Write down the name of the various publishers. Send your book to them and see if they will publish it. If your book has any merit, a standard commercial publisher will offer to publish it. If your book has merit, there are no shortcuts.
